Beatrice Rana – Ravel: Miroirs: III. Une barque sur l’océan

“It’s always poetic, not simply showy,” Beatrice Rana says of Ravel’s Miroirs. She pairs this work with Stravinsky’s The Firebird Suite and Three Movements from Petrushka on this thrilling album:

“Ravel was writing for the piano in an innovative way,” she explains. “It’s in the tradition of Romanticism and of Liszt, but it’s painterly in style, with the piano becoming become an instrument to describe landscapes and nature and the composer’s responses … We need to remember that these are images reflected in a mirror, not simply a description of what you see.”
